About
Once upon a time, I had a website called The Reluctant Cat Owner's Journal, and it grew into quite a surprisingly well-read site considering it was just me writing stories about my cats. I had readers from all over the world and my work translated into Finnish. In 2016, I was recognized with an Honorable Mention from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists in the Under 100,000 Monthly Unique Visitors category, with one judge stating, "As it says in 'Field of Catnip,' write cat columns and they will come, as in readers. I kept shoving these columns back in the pile, and they kept crawling out."
As my audience grew, I contributed to other websites such as "...So Then" Stories, Humor Outcasts, and Scary Mommy. For the latter, I wrote an article called How to Talk to Your Kids About Gay People that gained well over 25,000 views and hundreds and hundreds of comments from both supporters and homophobes. Some "wine mommies" are sensitive when it comes to childless, gay men demanding respect, I suppose; however, when a parent cried "what am I supposed to tell my children?" after being confronted with equal rights for gays, I directed them to this article...until Scary Mommy took it down about five years later. Fuck them.
But life changes, and one of those life-changing circumstance brought about the closing of The Reluctant Cat Owner's Journal. I still regret letting it go. I still wonder what it could have been today if I hadn't. But as Judge Judy would say, "Shoulda. Woulda. Coulda."
Because I love to write and share stories, I decided to do this again. This time, I'll write stories that talk about my experience with gay culture. Why? Because I grew up identifying as heterosexual in a small Southern town. I didn't "come out" and experience gay culture until my mid-twenties. And even though I have been openly gay for half of my life, gay culture still confuses and amuses me from time to time. Hell, I'm hoping some of you can relate.
